... 1950, Ralph Bunche, a Detroit-born U.N. diplomat whose grandmother had been born into slavery, became the 1st African-American to win the Nobel Peace Prize (prior posts here and here). Today in Oslo, Norway, another African American, President Barack Obama, receives the same prize (prior posts here and here), in a ceremony to be webcast beginning at 7 a.m. Eastern Time. ... 1957, U.S. Rep. Kathy Dahlkemper (D-Pennsylvania) was born in Erie, Pa. She was sworn into Congress this past January, the 1st woman ever to represent her district.
