On December 20

On this day in ...
... 1954 (55 years ago today), Sandra Cisneros (right) was born in Chicago, Illinois, "the third child and only daughter in a family of seven children" that frequently migrated between her birthplace and Mexico City. (photo credit) Eventually the family bought a house in a Latino neighborhood in Chicago, and Sandra began to write. Life in that home was the inspiration for her best-known book, The House on Mango Street (1984), which weaves English and Spanish in the same narrative. Holder of a B.A. from Loyola Chicago and an M.F.A. from Iowa, and the recipient of National Endowment for the Arts and MacArthur Foundation awards, Cisneros has taught creative writing to high school dropouts and to university students, even as she continues to write. She lives in San Antonio, Texas.
