On this day in ...
... 1504 (505 years ago today), outside the Palazzo della Signoria, the city government building in Florence, the statue of David by Michelangelo was unveiled. The 17-foot-tall young man was "clothed" in nothing more than the slingshot with which, according to the Bible, he was about slay the giant Goliath. Truly one of the most breathtaking works of Renaissance art, David was sculpted, over the course of 3 years, from a single block of Carrara marble. Now housed inside the Uffizi Gallery, it is a sight not to be missed by any visitor to Italy.
