... 1990, Marlene Dietrich, then 88 years old, was awarded the French medal, the Légion d'honneur. Though born in Berlin, the actor-singer had left Germany for Hollywood in 1930. During World War II Dietrich (near left) spoke out against Nazism and anti-Semitism, sold war bonds, and performed at USO shows for Allied troops. (photo credit)
