... 1929 (80 years ago today), a son was born in Atlanta, Georgia, to a minister and a former schoolteacher. The child would become a rights activist about whom we've written frequently, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The U.S. day in honor of King will be next Monday, January 19 -- "Not a Day Off," urge those who for the last several years have made it a Day of Service. ... 2009, the Tamil culture celebrates the multi-day harvest festival of Pongal. Pongal coincides with similar festivals in other Asian cultures, called, variously, Sankranti, Makar Sankranti, Uttarayan, and Lohri. (credit for making of a kolam, or sand-painting decoration, outside house during this festival)
