... 1998 (10 years ago today), at Abuja, Nigeria, a peace agreement was signed by the government of Guinea-Bissau and a "self-proclaimed Military Junta" led by the former Army Chief of Staff for the country. The agreement ended a civil war begun 4 months earlier. But "security concerns" remained in the West African state (left), which had been a Portuguese colony until the early 1970s.

... 1848 (160 years ago today), 12 women entered the New England Female Medical College, the 1st of its kind, established by a man who objected to male physicians attending to women at childbirth. A quarter-century later the Boston-based college merged with Boston University School of Medicine, making it 1 of the world's 1st coeducational medical schools. (image credit)
