Write On! Local transitional justice

(Write On! is an occasional item about notable calls for papers.) "Whose Justice? Global and Local Approaches to Transitional Justice" is the theme of a forthcoming edition of the International Journal of Transitional Justice, which has just issued a call for papers.Special editor for this edition will be Dr. Kimberly Theidon (below left), Associate Professor of Anthropology at Harvard and Executive Director of the Praxis Institute for Social Justice.
The issue's aim: to track new developments in transitional justice; specifically, the contemporary reality that calls on "practitioners ... increasingly ... to intervene in contexts in which the issues of justice, redress and social reonstruction involve 'intimate enemies.'" Addressing these issues increasingly may require more intimate, more local, responses.
Paper topics may include:
► Who defines transitional justice and its goals, and what's the content of those definitions?
► How do international justice mechanisms interrelate with local processes and priorities, on matters such as complementarity, sequencing, and victimhood?
► What's the role of various actors in applying a transitional justice politics of scale?
► Do transitional justice mechanisms contribute to reconciliation and social reconstruction, and if so, how?
► How might local mechanisms be incorporated into national or international interventions?
► What's the spectrum of local mechanisms? What role can local ritual, for example, play?
Online submissions may be made at the Journal 's webpage; for more information, e-mail ijtj@csvr.org.za. Deadline for submissions is April 15, 2009.
