On this day in ...... 1616 (395 years ago today), decades after his death, the Sacred Congregation of the Roman Catholic Church condemned Nicolaus Copernicus for espousing, in his On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres, a theory that the Church deemed false; that is, that the earth moved around a stationary sun. (image credit) Just last year, the Church in Poland reburied Copernicus' remains in a cathedral, while "prelates praised him as a man of devotion and scientific genius."
