... 1956 (55 years ago today) an Alabama court convicted Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. of organizing African Americans in Montgomery to engage in a boycott of buses. The 27-year-old civil rights leader received a $500 fine -- converted into a 386-day jail sentence that was suspended pending appeal.
