On this day in ... ... 1989, in the 1st Soviet parliamentary election in which voters could choose candidates from parties other than Communist, millions of persons cast ballots, and "early results suggest[ed] that a number of Communist candidates have been rejected by the electorate." The election proved a milepost on the path to democracy in the state now known, again, as Russia.
