On January 16

On this day in ...
... 2001 (10 years ago today), President Laurent Kabila was assassinated by a bodyguard at his mansion in Kinshasha, Democratic Republic of Congo. The killing occurred against the backdrop of violence in the country, fueled at at times by neighbors Rwanda and Uganda. Having come to power when rebels deposed dictator Mobutu Sese Seko in 1997, Kabila would be succeeded by his son, Joseph Kabila, still President in a country that, as we've posted, is still plagued by conflict.
