On this day in ...... 1936, in Eastview (now Vanier), Ontario, Canada, Dorothea Palmer (left), "a twenty-eight-year-old social worker and part owner of a bookstore" employed as a nurse, was arrested for disseminating information about birth control and contraceptive devices to a poor, Roman Catholic family. She would be acquitted after a lengthy trial; the decision "overruled religious and medical objections to the dissemination of birth control information." Rex v. Palmer led to the legalizing of such distribution. (credit for undated photo)
