Former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet was named today by Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon to head the newly-established UN Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, known as UN Women. The UN press release about the announcement is here.The new entity, which was established by a unanimous General Assembly vote on July 2 and is due to become operational in January 2011, merges four existing UN offices into one (see prior IntLawGrrls post here): UNIFEM, INSTRAW, DAW and OSAGI.
