On this day in ...
... 1866, the National Labor Union, recently formed at a convention in Baltimore, Maryland, urged Congress to limit the working day to 8 hours. The Union was the 1st in the United States to bring together a variety of skilled and unskilled workers; it preferred methods other than strikes. Though it had an estimated half-million members at its height, the Union dissolved in 1873.
