... 1987, thousands gathered around the world to mark what they called "the first time in 23,412 years that the planets were aligned to produce 'cleansing energy.''' A couple thousand sang 1960s rock songs and danced at dawn in New York 's Central Park, The New York Times reported, while "a lone dancer" did the same at Egypt's pyramids, and "a philosopher ... blew on a conch shell 144 times" in Colorado. The astronomical alignment was seen as an occasion for a "harmonic convergence,'' an effort "to forestall a 25-year period of catastrophic events" prophesied in a Mayan calendar.
