On this day in ...
... 1965, in Britain, the Murder (Abolition of Death Penalty) Act 1965 was adopted. It began with these words:
No person shall suffer death for murder, and a person convicted of murder shall . . . be sentenced to imprisonment for life.

It thus ended capital punishment for the crime of murder.
