On February 7

On this day in ...
... 1991 (20 years ago today), on the 5th anniversary of the exile of "Baby Doc" Jean-Claude Duvalier's flight into exile, the Catholic priest who'd received 65% of the vote in December elections, Jean-Bertrand Aristide, was sworn in as the 1st democratically elected President of Haiti. (credit for photo of Aristide, in center) He would be ousted in a coup later in the year, would be reinstated in 1994, would fail in one re-election bid and win another. Aristide has been in exile since 2004. Following the return of "Baby Doc" (prior posts here and here), Aristide's indicated that he too wants to come back to Haiti, despite U.S. opposition.
