... 2002, in Salt Lake City, Utah, Vonetta Flowers (near right) became the "first black athlete (male or female) -- from any country--to ever win an Olympic Winter Games gold medal." She'd been born 37 years earlier in Birmingham, Alabama, Flowers and her U.S. teammate Jill Bakken (far right) finished 1st in the 2-woman bobsled, winning the 1st U.S. medal in that event in 46 years.
