On this day in ...... 1966, "1st Monday," the U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments to open its October Term -- only the 2d Term in history during which a woman served as a Justice's law clerk. The woman was Margaret Corcoran, daughter of the legendary political operative Thomas G. Corcoran; she'd been hired by Justice Hugo Black, and died not long after her clerkship. Her lone predecessor had been Lucile Lomen, clerk to Justice William O.Douglas in October Term 1944. (Incidentally, 1st Monday 2009 is 2 days hence; the Court's scheduled to hear 3 arguments that day.)
