On this day in ...... 1908, in Muller v. Oregon, the U.S. Supreme Court unanimously held constitutional a state law limiting to 10 hours the workday of women in laundries and factories. The decision turned in part on Louis D. Brandeis' "famous brief" that "detailed expert reports on the harmful physical, economic and social effects of long working hours on women," and further on the Court's espousal of "the accepted wisdom of the day: that women were unequal and inferior to men."
