On this day in ...... 1834, Spain and the United States signed a treaty in which the former paid the latter 12 million reals "for settlement of all claims" respecting
territory. In the United States the pact was called the Van Ness Convention in recognition of the U.S. negotiator, "Cornelius P. Van Ness, envoy extraordinary," and father of a future mayor of San Francisco. Treaty ratifications would be exchanged at Madrid in August of the same year.
