On this day in ...... 1950 (60 years ago today), Disney Studios released Cinderella (right), a feature-length animated film that would prove the studio's 1st big hit since Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) (prior post). Like many a fairy tale, this thanks-to-godmother-good-girl-makes-good saga is inherently transnational. It's based on a story in Charles Perrault's 1697 book Histoires ou Contes du Temps passé, avec des Moralités: Contes de ma Mère l'Oye, published in Paris. Since its début, moreover, the film has appeared in myriad languages besides the original English, for instance: in Swedish as Askungen, in Japanese as シンデレラ, and, of course in French, as Cendrillon.
