On this day in ...... 1979 (30 years ago today), during a protest against the military regime then in power in El Salvador, police opened fire on protesters at the Metropolitan Cathedral in San Salvador, killing 2 dozen persons and wounding many more. The incident presaged a decade of civil war in the Central American country.
... 1995, the capital city of what was then Zaire and is now the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kinshasa, was placed under quarantine following an outbreak of Ebola, a virus (right) that can cause, in humans and nonhuman primates such as monkeys, gorillas, and chimpanzees, a hemorrhagic fever that is severe and often fatal.(Prior May 9 posts are here and here.)
