Go On! Human Rights Advocates to celebrate its 30th & UDHR's 60th anniversaries

(Go On! is an occasional item on symposia of interest.) On Saturday, October 25, 2008 at 6 p.m. Human Rights Advocates will celebrate its 30th Anniversary along with the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights at the Goldberg Room at Boalt Hall, UC Berkeley School of Law. There will also be a memorial tribute to Frank C. Newman, the California Supreme Court justice who was the inspiration behind HRA, and Frannie Newman, who continued to support HRA after his death (both pictured below right). Frannie passed away earlier this year.
Featured will be panel presentation entitled Dialogue on Racism and International Human Rights Standards – 60 years after the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, starting at 7 p.m. The panel will consist of:
José Lindgren Alves, Former Ambassador of Brazil and now National Coordinator for the Alliance of Civilizations, as well as expert on the UN Committee for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD), and recently appointed member of HRA’s International Advisory Board, will speak about CERD’s efforts to combat racism, and include a discussion on the intersection between racism and freedom of religion.
Sandra Coliver, Senior Legal Officer at the Open Justice Initiative, and former Executive Director of the Center for Justice and Accountability, co-founder of HRA, and dedicated member of HRA’s National Advisory Board for many years, will present on hate speech, including speech that is perceived to be insulting to religious sentiments.
► Yours truly, Connie de la Vega, law professor at the University of San Francisco School of Law and Director of the Frank C. Newman International Human Rights Law Clinic, and co-founder and past President of HRA, will share her work on the international law governing affirmative action and how it can be used in the United States.
