... 1978 (30 years ago today), a Pacific Ocean island group located about halfway between Hawaii and Australia, which the British had called Ellice Islands, became independent and took the name Tuvalu. Today the 26-square-mile country has a population of approximately 10,000.
... 1975, the 1st annual International Music Day was celebrated. UNESCO proclaimed the day in order to "promot[e] our musical art among all sections of society," and thus to further "ideals of peace and friendship between peoples, of the evolution of their cultures, of the exchange of experience and of the mutual appreciation of their aesthetic values." One way to mark the day: consider the past and future of the world's women composers.
