Help for Haiti

Further to the posts above and below, a number of excellent organizations are providing emergency assistance in Haiti in connection with the quake. The groups listed below were already doing good work in Haiti before this tragedy struck, so they can immediately allocate additional funding for emergency responses.

Partners in Health
This organization, founded by Paul Farmer who was considered to head U.S. AID, works to provide modern medical care to the world's poorest people. They have one of the only functioning medical infrastructures on the ground in Haiti.

Haiti Emergency Relief Fund
This more grassroots organization is administered by the East Bay Sanctuary Covenant and it set up to provide funds directly to other grassroots groups on the ground in Haiti, i.e. small clinics and schools. This group uses no funds raised for overhead; 100% of any donation will make it to Haiti.

What If? Foundation
This Bay Area-administered program already feeds hundreds of kids in one of Port au Prince's most densely populated areas hit hard by the quake. They have infrastructure in place to immediately put funds to good use.
All three partner with the Institute for Justice & Democracy in Haiti and the Bureau des Avocats Internationaux, two excellent legal aid/human rights organizations in and focused on Haiti.
Trans-Africa Forum also has an urgent action campaign for Temporary Protected Status for Haitians.

Before giving, be sure to check the legitimacy of any charity on Charity Navigator; the scams have already begun.
