On this day in ...... 1534, European voyagers and indigenous Americans encountered one another, for what's said to be the 1st time ever, when French explorer Jacques Cartier, who'd arrived at North America weeks earlier, met and traded with inhabitants of the basin surrounding the Gulf of St. Lawrence, at the Baie des Chaleurs (charted in the 1612 map at left), in what is now New Brunswick, Canada.
