On this day in ...
... 1989, in Cold Lake, Alberta, Capt. Deanna Brasseur (left) and Capt. Jane Foster (below right) completed a course to become the 1st two women fighter pilots available for combat roles in Canada and, possibly, the world. (photo credits here and here) Brasseur, who'd also been 1 of the 1st 3 Canadian military women to earn her pilot's "wings," would retire in 1994, with the rank of major and having logged more than 2,500 in fighter-jet flying. Foster eventually became a flying instructor, a position from which she retired in 2008.
