
... 1978, in the wake of criticism from abroad, the United States "put on the back burner" plans to place neutron bomb warheads on missiles and shells "planned for deployment in Europe." A "specialised thermonuclear weapon which produces a minimal blast but releases large amounts of lethal radiation, the bomb "designed to kill people while minimising damage to property...." Although development would be authorized in 1981, only a few such bombs were made, and none was deployed to Europe. China would announce development of the neutron bomb in 1999.
