On this day in ...... 1978, in the wake of criticism from abroad, the United States "put on the back burner" plans to place neutron bomb warheads on missiles and shells "planned for deployment in Europe." A "specialised thermonuclear weapon which produces a minimal blast but releases large amounts of lethal radiation, the bomb "designed to kill people while minimising damage to property...." Although development would be authorized in 1981, only a few such bombs were made, and none was deployed to Europe. China would announce development of the neutron bomb in 1999.
