On this day in ...... 1941, in Québec, Canada, the Bar Act was amended so that the province permitted women to practice law. Previously, they were banned from the legal profession even if they had a law degree. The change came "[a]fter decades of attempts and rebuffs." It would be another 15 years before women were allowed to become practicing notaries.
