On this day in ...... 79 (1,930 years ago today), in the Italian coastal region near the Bay of Naples, Mount Vesuvius erupted, and the lava that flowed from the volcano buried the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum and killed tens of thousands of inhabitants. located on the volcano's flanks, and several million people live within areas potentially affected by eruptions of Vesuvius."... 1816, 3 U.S. commissioners plenipotentiary concluded a treaty of "Peace, Friendship, and Limits," with leaders of several Native American tribes. By this Treaty of St. Louis the chiefs ceded land in what is now the Midwest of the United States in exchange for monetary compensation.
