On this day in ...... 1970 (40 years ago today), at Canada's House of Commons in Ottawa, the nearly 500-page Report of the Royal Commission on the Status of Women in Canada was presented. The 167 recommendations in the report (left) -- on, for example, maternity leave, contraception, family law, child care, and pensions -- "were based on fundamental principles which assumed that equality of opportunity for Canadian men and women was possible, desirable and ethically necessary."
