On this day in ...... 1862, the United States gave official recognition to the Republic of Liberia (flag at left), the western Africa coastal territory, and onetime U.S. colony, which had declared its independence in 1847. On this day a U.S.-Liberia treaty of commerce and navigation was signed, and formal diplomatic relations were established.
