... 1999, Judge Navanethem Pillay (below left) was elected President of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, on the final day of the ICTR's 6th plenary session. As detailed in a
profile published in the International Judicial Monitor of the American Society of International Law and the International Judicial Academy, Pillay "is a product of apartheid South Africa," having been born in Natal in 1941, 1 of 4 daughters in a family headed by a bus driver. She was the 1st woman of color to start a law firm in her hometown. Judge Pillay now serves on the International Criminal Court.
