...1892 (115 years ago today), Pearl Comfort Sydenstricker was born in Hillsboro, West Virginia, to a Presbyterian missionary couple. When she was 3 her family would move to China, location of The Good Earth and the many other works that she would write under the name Pearl S. Buck (left). Active in rights campaigns on behalf of women, African-Americans, and mixed-race children, Buck became, in 1938, the 1st American woman to win the Nobel Prize in literature.... 1945, the San Francisco Conference concluded as delegates from 50 countries signed the United Nations Charter, which would enter into force on October 24 of the same year.
