The latter option won by a margin of 12.7 million votes to 10.7 million, thus giving birth to the Republic of Italy. King Umberto II went into exile, and died in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1983.
... 1937 (70 years ago today), Rosalyn Higgins, President of the International Court of Justice, was born in London. Elected to the court in 1995, she remains the only woman ever to have served there.
