... 1991, Rita Johnston became the 1st woman Premier in Canada when she was chosen as Acting Premier for the province of British Columbia. Born Rita Margaret Leichert on April 22, 1935, in Melville, Saskatchewan, Johnston (right) and her husband had managed a trailer park before she entered politics in 1969. She served as Premier until her party, Social Credit, lost a provincial general election in October 1991.

This date was chosen to commemorate the birth in 1805 of Hans Christian Andersen, the Dane whose stories range from the still-politically-trenchant "Emperor's New Clothes" (which inspired this article) to the thanks-to-Disney-newly-popular "Little Mermaid." Today's a great day to reread your own favorite children's book -- if possible, with your own favorite children.
