... 1968 (40 years ago today), a week after the shooting of student leader Rudi Dutschke, angry students blocked the Kurfurstendamm, the "main thoroughfare" in West Berlin, Germany. The demonstration "ended in violent clashes between police and protesters." Among the nearly 200 people arrested was the son of Willy Brandt, then the foreign minister and later the Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany as well as a Nobel Peace Prizewinner.
... 1988 (20 years ago today), in Geneva, Switzerland, the Soviet Union promised to withdraw its troops from Afghanistan.
