... 1893, Canada and France signed a reciprocity treaty in Paris, the North American country's 1st with a European state. Among other things it guaranteed lower duty rates to French wines. In fewer than 15 years, it would be superseded by a far more comprehensive, bilateral commercial trade agreement.
... 1840, in the Bay of Islands, English settlers and Māori rangatira, or chieftains, signed the Treaty of Waitangi (right), rendered in both the English and Māori languages. Over the course of the year the signatures of 500 Māori, of whom 13 were women, were added to the treaty, which constitutes the founding document of New Zealand.
