... 1881, the feminist newspaper La Citoyenne, which "argued vociferously for women's enfranchisement," was founded in Paris. Establishing the journal was Hubertine Auclert (right), who'd once studied to become a Roman Catholic nun but became a leading feminist and women's suffragist. The paper, whose name in English means "The Citizeness," closed after Auclert's stay in Algeria, and her return to Paris as a widow. But she continued her activism till her death in 1914....1900, in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada, the 1st chapter of the Imperial Order of the Daughters of the Empire was established. This "women's patriotic and philanthropic organization" continues to this day, now with 8,200 members and 383 chapters throughout the country.
