'If I get extradited, the Justice and Peace process ends there, because the foot soldiers do not know anything.'

-- Former paramilitary commander Ever Veloza (above left), aka "HH," quoted in this fascinating Washington Post story about tension between human rights groups and atrocity investigators in Colombia, on the one hand, and U.S. prosecutors, on the other. In the past year Veloza's "confessed to nearly 1,000 slayings ... and recounted how the death squads he helped run were supported by army officers and prominent politicians." His testimony in Colombia's Justicia y la Paz process will come to a halt if he's sent to stand trial in federal court in New York on cocaine-trafficking charges.
