... 1958 (50 years ago today), USS Nautilus, a nuclear-powered submarine, became the 1st vessel to cross the North Pole underwater. The Pacific-to-Atlantic voyage of the submarine (left) went through more than 1,800 miles of poar ice cap.

... 1972, the U.S. Senate gave its advice and consent to the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty, by which the United States and the Soviet Union agreed to curtail their development of such missiles.
