... 1925, Nellie Tayloe Ross was sworn in as Governor of Wyoming, making her the 1st woman to govern of any state in the United States. Born in Missouri in 1876, she'd been a schoolteacher in Nebraska for a few years before moving to Wyoming in 1902 with her new husband, William B. Ross, who'd be elected the state's governor in 1922. Upon his death in 1925, Tayloe Ross (left) was elected by a large margin to succeed him. (She beat Miriam A. Ferguson, Governor of Texas 1925-27 and 1933-35, to inauguration as the 1st U.S. woman governor by 16 days.) She failed to win reelection in 1927; thereafter, she served in 1928 as vice chair of the national Democratic Party and, from 1933 to 1953, as director of the U.S. Mint. Tayloe Ross died in Cheyenne in 1977, at age 101.
