They and 7 others to the South Pole have arrived safely, more than two months after starting their record-breaking journey. Hartley said she'd undertaken the feat out of a "driving force of adventure." On January 24 of the same month, 5 British women -- Zoe Hudson, Pam Oliver, Caroline Hamilton, Ann Daniels and Rosie Stancer, at right -- completed the 1st all-woman expeditions to both the North and South Poles.

He asked for "'doubling the war against poverty this year; and called for new emphasis on area redevelopment, further efforts at retraining unskilled workers, an improvement in the unemployment compensation system," "an extension of the minimum wage floor to two million workers now unprotected by it," "attacking physical and mental disease, urban blight, water and air pollution, and crime and delinquency," and "a 'massive effort to save the countryside' by establishing more parks, seashores, open spaces, recreation facilities and beautified highway rights-of-way." The program would falter as U.S. military involvement in Vietnam increased.
