... 1947, the Canadian Citizenship Act came into effect. By this act persons in the northernmost American country attained the status of citizens for the 1st time. A local newspaper enthused: "[T]here are no more Irish-Canadians, French Canadians, Ukrainian Canadians, German Canadians. They are now just plain Canadians—12,000,000 of them."
