... 1970, upon learning of the murder of Quebec's Labour Minister, Pierre Trudeau Canada's Prime Minister, invoked emergency powers for the 1st time ever in peacetime. Police "round up and interview 497 possible suspects, arresting 250," and "searc[h] 170 homes," under the authority of the 1914 War Measures Act, in an effort to break up the Quebec Liberation Front believed to have committed the murder and abducted a still-missing British diplomat.
... 1946, 10 Nazi leaders were hanged days after they were convicted and sentenced to death on conclusion of the Trial of the Major War Criminals conducted by the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg. Hours before the execution an 11th defendant, Hermann Göring (left), cheated the hangman by ingesting a cyanide capsule and taking his own life in his cell.
