...1857 (150 years ago today), Cécile Chaminade (right) was born in Paris. She studied music from early childhood, giving her 1st public piano concert at age 18. Chaminade toured not only France, but also England, where she performed for Queen Victoria, and the United States. Her piano compositions gained such renown that in 1910 a magazine wrote: "[A]t the present time she enjoys a reputation as a composer which has never been equaled by any woman composer." Even greater praise came from a male counterpart, who said of Chaminade: "This is not a woman who composes, but a composer who is a woman."
...1945, Britain, France, the Soviet Union, and the United States signed an Agreement for the Prosecution and Punishment of the Major War Criminals of the European Axis, to which was annexed the Charter of the International Military Tribunal that would begin its 1st trial at Nuremberg, Germany, later in the year.
