...and counting...
(Occasional sobering thoughts.) Amid U.S. reports that in June Iraqi civilian casualties dropped while servicemember casualties rose, here's the count: Iraq Body Count reports that as of June 30 between 66,807 and 73,120 Iraqis, women, children, and men, had died in the conflict -- an increase of 1,691 to 1,792 deaths in the last 3 weeks. American servicemember fatalities: 3,586 persons through July 2. Total coalition fatalities: 3,870 persons. (That's 81 servicemember deaths in 3 weeks, all but 7 of them Americans.) The Department of Defense report on injuries remained the same as it was 3 weeks ago: a total of 25,549 servicemembers wounded, 7,628 of whom required medical air transport; the total of such transports, on account of woundings and "non-hostile" maladies, is 34,650. Military casualties in the conflict in Afghanistan stand at 407 Americans and 209 other coalition servicemembers, an increase of 8 and 9, respectively, in the last 2 weeks. Reported injuries in Afghanistan also remained where they were 3 weeks ago: a total of 1,636 wounded U.S. servicemembers wounded is reported, 743 of whom required medical air transport; the total of such transports, on account of woundings and "non-hostile" maladies, is 6,213.
