On this day in ...... 1988 (20 years ago today), in Oslo, Norway, the Nobel committee announced its decision to award the 1988 Nobel Peace Prize to the United Nations' peacekeeping forces. These troops nicknamed "blue helmets," the committee wrote, "represent the manifest will of the community of nations to achieve peace through negotiations"; moreover, "the forces have, by their presence, made a decisive contribution towards the initiation of actual peace negotiations."
