... 1988 (20 years ago today), the 1985 Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer, which sets out a framework for protection of the ozone layer enveloping Earth (image credit), entered into force. Today the Convention enjoys almost universal acceptance, having been ratified by 193 countries.
... 1880, Christabel Pankhurst was born in Manchester, England, to Emmeline Pankhurst and Dr. Richard Pankhurst. She joined forces with her suffragist mother. In 1903 the 2 of them helped establish the "breakaway suffrage society" Women's Social and Political Union (WPSU), then dissolved it in 1917 to co-found the Women's Party. Christabel earned a law degree in 1906, then became a militant author and advocate for women's rights, pursuits that landed her in jail in London and subsequently in exile in Paris. Following a narrow defeat in a bid for public office just after Englishwomen won the vote, she moved to the United States for time. Christabel died in Los Angeles in 1958.
